Five circus professionals from different fields discuss their relationship with criticism in circus, whether they think it’s valuable, how they can make use of it and what challenges they feel it brings.

Karen Fricker:

Is Associate Professor of Dramatic Arts, Brock University and Theatre Critic, the Toronto Star. Karen is a theatre critic and an academic whose research includes contemporary circus, and is co-founder of the Circus and its Others research project.

Is an Independent Producer & is primarily interested in circus, outdoor and multi-sensory accessible shows. She’s occasionally found moonlighting as a clown or wannabe puppeteer.

Dave Spathaky:

Is a greybeard circus performer. He produces zoom video webinars. He started performing in The Amazing Mendezies, a comedy double act in Covent Garden, London in 1981. He co-founded circus theatre company Ra-Ra Zoo in 1984. He holds the world record for spinning 108 dinner plates at once and started a new career as a circus community builder last week; he says he’s been training for the role all his life.
